Montour Trail access gate and fence construction


We will be installing a fence and gate at an access point (Behind Carmen Paliotta Construction) to the Montour trail, to stop unauthorized vehicles from getting onto the trail while still letting the Montour trail use it for their equipment. The fence will be about 50 feet long with 4 4x4 posts and 2 6x6 posts.The Montour Trail is a public trail for people to walk, run, or bike on. The Montour Trail Council is a non-profit organization that is responsible for the upkeep and improvement of the trail.   It is 47 miles long and starts in Coraopolis and ends in Clairton. It is the country’s longest rail trail, meaning it is built on what used to be railways. 


8:30 am - until project is done, at latest 5pm.  Breakfast and Lunch will be provided (Bagels, Donuts, Pizza, Coffee, Hot Chocolate, Gatorade). Lunch will be served 12:00-1:00.

What you need

MUST HAVE: Work clothes, gloves, boots, water bottle, rain gear, warm clothes.

IF YOU HAVE: shovel, post hole digger, socket set, drills, bits, digging bar, rakes, chisels, circular saws, hand saws, hammers, levels, pickaxes.

228 Thunderbirds & ThunderCubs attend the Eagle Valley District (EVD) 2019 Kondike

Troop 228 Thunderbirds & Pack 228 Thundercubs competed in the 2019 Eagle Valley District EVD Klondike @ Camp Twin echo in Ligonier PA


Troop 228  won a “cabin”  lottery at the Eagle Valley District’s monthly round table meeting in December , and the Thunderbirds stayed in  the Hill Crest cabin at the far end of Camp Twin Echo. At least 3 Troops camped out side in tents or the Adirondacks. One Troop set up a “day” campsite, with hot coffee, hot chocolate, Portable Pavilion, camp chairs, etc   

During the annual Troop 228 parent planning meeting this past summer the following Troop 228 Parent’s volunteered to be the leaders for this event.  Adult Leaders:  M. Coyle, Mrs. Roule

Mrs. Roule & Mr. Rooney made significant contributions to Troop 228 and its participation in this annual event by taking ownership of feeding the Troop for the weekend.  The menu was finalized at the Troop meeting on Tuesday, the Troop treasures issue a check for the  food and  Mrs. Roule and Mr. Rooney  made the arrangements to procure the required food. Saturday breakfast, Biscuits , Eggs, Sausage, Bacon,Fruit,Milk, Juice, etc... Saturday Dinner; Beef Stew, Baked Potato’s, Fruit, Bread,etc…

Assistant Scout Master( Quarter Master ) Mr. Coyle worked with the youth leaders and adult leaders  at the last Troop meeting to ensure  the Troop had all the required equipment  and the means to transport the  equipment to Camp Twin Echo.   

Mr. Kraska and Mr. Fleming ran the Tomahawk station for the Klondike event from 9AM – 2PM .  Mr. Fleming   and Mr Kraska have attended 11 out of the 12 last EVD Klondike events the Thunderbirds participated in.

Mr. Chojnicki  & Mr. Kirpatrick & Mr. Campbell assisted in innumerable ways : Transport Scouts to camp Twin Echo , assist with meal prep and meal clean up, tailed the Scout Patrols as they participated in the Klondike.

Mr. Rooney, Mr. Chojinicki, and  Mr. Coyle  spent  a significant part of the morning splitting firewood and delivering it around to various cabins at   Camp Twin Echo. Mr Rooney build a fire for the First-Aid station at  Miller Lodge.

The Camping Coordinators (aka Outdoor/Activities Coordinator0 Mr. Echert & Mr. Moriarty) performed Online Registration(Payment) for the Troop, coordinated parent drivers, and coordinated with Troop Treasures to receive payment from the Scouts.


Troop 228 (adults and youths) is invited to Scout Sunday on February 10, 2019 at CUMC

Print the attached flyer  and or send it to your School's  administrators to invite Boys and Girls ( ages 11-19) to our(www.228Thunderbirds.com)  Open House on Feb 12 @ 7:30-9:00PM

Might be nice to target grades 3-9.

Parent Planning Meeting

Troop 228 continues to seek parents interested in helping run the great Thunderbirds Youth-Scouting program.

  • Committee Member -Web Site Administrator (SOAR)
  • Committee Member-Troop Secretary
  • Committed Member-Scout Book Administrator
  • Committee Member – Camping Coordinator(perhaps 2 or 3 of these will be required)
  • Fully Trained ASM (Assistant Scout Master)  we need to augment Troop 228's ASM staff by at least two, from our First Year Scouts Parents through 4th Year Scouts Parents(5th Grade – 9thGrade). Must Attend IOLS (introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) ), the Eagle Valley District is offering this class in April (26,27,28) register here ==> https://scoutingevent.com/527-EVIOLS
